Despite the long odds—1 in 1,598,205 for the top prize—Kettle’s luck paid off big time. Since the game launched, there were only four $2 million top prizes available. With Kettle’s recent win, just one of these grand prizes remains unclaimed.

Upon claiming his prize at the Lottery headquarters on Monday, Kettle chose the lump sum payout option of $1.2 million instead of the 20 annual payments of $100,000. After federal and state taxes, he took home $858,006.

In addition to the grand prizes, Big Cash Payout offers tier-two prizes of $100,000, with odds of 1 in 799,102.5. Currently, only three of these tier-two prizes are still available.

Meanwhile, Reginald Epps of Youngsville, near Raleigh, turned a simple $1 ticket into a windfall by matching all five winning numbers in the Cash 5 drawing on Saturday. The ticket was purchased at Rose Mart on N.C. 96 in Youngsville.

The top prize odds in Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598, making Epps’ win an exciting holiday miracle. After claiming his prize on Monday, and paying applicable taxes, Epps walked away with $452,741.
