Arizona Gambling Regulator Warns Against Illegal Online Operators
The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has issued a fresh warning to residents about the risks of unlicensed gambling websites. As part of Responsible Gaming Education Month, the regulator reminded players that offshore and illegal platforms pose significant dangers and are not authorized to operate in Arizona.
Rising Concerns Over Illegal Gambling Websites
According to the ADG, many consumers have reported serious issues when using unregulated sites, including frozen accounts, denied withdrawal requests, misleading terms and conditions, and lack of complaint handling. Because these platforms operate outside of Arizona’s legal framework, the regulator has no authority to intervene.
ADG Emphasizes the Need for Licensed Operators
Jackie Johnson, director of the ADG, stressed that unlicensed websites fail to provide essential consumer protections. “Unregulated platforms lack responsible gaming safeguards, age verification, and offer no consumer protections, which puts Arizonans at risk,” Johnson said. She highlighted the importance of ensuring residents have access to resources that promote safe and informed gambling choices.
Responsible Gaming Safeguards Missing on Offshore Sites
Elise Mikkelson, director of the Division of Problem Gambling, echoed these concerns, noting that licensed operators in Arizona must meet strict standards for responsible gaming. Without these safeguards, players using offshore sites face higher risks of harm. She also pointed to Arizona’s self-exclusion program, which already includes more than 11,000 residents who have opted out of gambling to protect themselves.
Self-Exclusion Program Does Not Cover Illegal Operators
While the state program offers vital protection for problem gamblers, it does not apply to offshore platforms. This gap leaves vulnerable individuals exposed to predatory practices and unregulated gambling content. The ADG continues to urge residents to verify licenses before registering with any gambling operator and to make use of available responsible gaming resources.
